Mongolian Gender

Welcome to the fifth Mongolian lesson about gender. This time we will view a list of people, feminine and masculine, followed by grammar rules, finally a list of expressions in Mongolian to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

Gender Grammar Rules

In general, gender is used to distinguish between male and female, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine. For example: my son and daughter are students the noun [son] is masculine, while [daughter] is feminine. The following examples use gender in different ways and places to demonstrate their behavior.

Grammar + Rules - Mongolian + Pronunciation
my son is a student
[masculine + noun] миний хүү бол оюутан
[miniĭ khүү bol oyuutan]
her daughter is a student
[feminine + noun] тэр эмэгтэйгийн охин бол оюутан
[kheer ekheegkheeĭgiĭn okhin bol oyuutan]
he has a tall brother
[adjective + masculine] тэр эрэгтэй өндөр ахтай
[kheer ekheegkheeĭ өndөr akhtaĭ]
she has a tall sister
[adjective + feminine] тэр эмэгтэй өндөр эгчтэй
[kheer ekheegkheeĭ өndөr egchkheeĭ]
his brothers are young
[plural masculine + adjective] тэр эрэгтэйгийн ах дүү залуухан
[kheer ekheegkheeĭgiĭn akh dүү zaluukhan]
his sisters are young
[plural feminine + adjective] тэр эрэгтэйгийн эгч дүү залуухан
[kheer ekheegkheeĭgiĭn egch dүү zaluukhan]

The list below will probably provide more clarification. These are family members (males and females). I think it would be wise to memorize them as part of your important vocabulary list.

Now it's time to practice expressions used in daily conversations. If you're a beginner in learning Mongolian, then the phrases below are something you would want to know.

What do you mean? та юу гэсэн бэ? [ta yuu gekheen be?]
I don't understand би ойлгохгүй байна [bi oĭlgokhgүĭ baĭna]
I don't know би мэдэхгүй [bi kheedekhgүĭ]
What is that called in Mongolian? үүнийг монгол хэлээр юу гэдэг вэ? [үүniĭg mongol kheekhekheer yuu gedeg ve?]
What is this? энэ юу вэ? [ekhee yuu ve?]
What does that word mean in English? энэ үг англи хэлээр ямар утгатай вэ? [ekhee үg angli kheekhekheer yamar utgataĭ ve?]
