Armenian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Armenian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Armenian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Armenian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Armenian - Pronunciation
I speak English Ես խոսում եմ անգլերեն: [Yes khosum yem angleren.]
you speak French Դուք խոսում եմ ֆրանսերեն: [Duk’ khosum yem franseren]
he speaks German Նա խոսում է գերմաներեն: [Na khosum e germaneren]
she speaks Italian Նա խոսում է իտալերեն: [Na khosum e italeren]
we speak Arabic Մենք խոսում ենք արաբերեն: [Menk’ khosum yenk’ araberen]
they speak Chinese Նրանք խոսում են չինարեն: [Nrank’ khosum yen ch’inaren]

The past tense in Armenian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Armenian - Pronunciation
I visited France Ես Ֆրանսիա այցելեցի: [Yes Fransia ayts’yelets’i]
you visited Italy Դուք Իտալիա այցելեցիք: [Duk’ Italia ayts’yelets’ik’.]
he visited Morocco Նա Մարոկկո այցելեց: [Na Marokko ayts’yelets’]
she visited China Նա Չինաստան այցելեց: [Na Ch’inastan ayts’yelets’]
we visited Mexico Մենք Մեքսիկա այցելեցինք: [Menk’ Mek’sika ayts’yelets’ink’]
they visited Kenya Նրանք Քենիա այցելեցին: [Nrank’ K’yenia ayts’yelets’in]

The future tense in Armenian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Armenian - Pronunciation
I will drink milk Ես կաթ կխմեմ: [Yes kat’ kkhmem]
you will drink coffee Դուք սուրճ կխմեք: [Duk’ surch kkhmek’]
he will drink tea Նա թեյ կխմի: [Na t’yey kkhmi]
she will drink water Նա ջուր կխմի: [Na jur kkhmi]
we will drink apple juice Մենք խնձորի հյութ կխմենք: [Menk’ khndzori hyut’ kkhmenk’]
they will drink tea Նրանք թեյ կխմեն: [Nrank’ t’yey kkhmen]

Travel Phrases in Armenian

Imagine yourself in some Armenian speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Armenian - Pronunciation
Can you help me? Կարող եք ինձ ոգնել? [Karogh yek’ indz vognel?]
Can I help you? Կարող եմ ոգնել Ձեզ? [Karogh yem vognel Dzez?]
Where is the airport? Որտեղ է օդանավակայանը? [Vortegh e odanavakayany.]
Go straight ՈՒղիղ գնացեք: [Ughigh gnats’yek’]
Then Հետո [Heto]
Turn left Ձախ թեքվեք: [Dzakh t’yek’vek’]
Turn right Աջ թեքվեք: [Aj t’yek’vek’]
