Esperanto Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Esperanto. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Esperanto.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Esperanto conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Esperanto
I speak English mi parolas la anglan
you speak French vi parolas la francan
he speaks German li parolas la germanan
she speaks Italian ŝi parolas la italan
we speak Arabic ni parolas la araban
they speak Chinese ili parolas la ĉinan

The past tense in Esperanto conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Esperanto
I visited France mi vizitis francio
you visited Italy vi vizitis italio
he visited Morocco li vizitis maroko
she visited China ŝi vizitis ĉinio
we visited Mexico ni vizitis meksiko
they visited Kenya ili vizitis kenjo

The future tense in Esperanto conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Esperanto
I will drink milk mi trinkos lakton
you will drink coffee vi trinkos kafon
he will drink tea li trinkos teon
she will drink water ŝi trinkos akvon
we will drink apple juice ni trinkos pomsukon
they will drink tea ili trinkos teon

Travel Phrases in Esperanto

Imagine yourself in some Esperanto speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Esperanto
Can you help me? ĉu vi povas helpi min?
Can I help you? per kio mi povas vin servi?
Where is the airport? kie estas la flughaveno?
Go straight iru rekte antaŭen
Then tiam
Turn left turnu vin maldekstren
Turn right turnu vin dekstren
