Bulgarian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Bulgarian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Bulgarian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Bulgarian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Bulgarian - Pronunciation
I speak English Аз говоря английски [Az guovorya anguliyski]
you speak French ти говориш френски [ti guovorish fryenski]
he speaks German той говори немски [toy guovori nyemski]
she speaks Italian тя говори италиански [tya guovori italianski]
we speak Arabic ние говорим арабски [niye guovorim arabski]
they speak Chinese те говорят китайски [tye guovoryat kitayski]

The past tense in Bulgarian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

I visited France Аз посетих Франция [Az posyetikh Frantziya]
you visited Italy ти посети Италия [ti posyeti Italiya]
he visited Morocco той посети Мароко [toy posyeti Maroko]
she visited China тя посети Китай [tya posyeti Kitay]
we visited Mexico ние посетихме Мексико [niye posyetikhmye Myeksiko]
they visited Kenya те посетиха Кения [tye posyetikha Kyeniya]

The future tense in Bulgarian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

I will drink milk Аз ще пия мляко [Az shtye piya mlyako]
you will drink coffee ти ще пиеш кафе [ti shtye piyesh kafye]
he will drink tea той ще пие чай [toy shtye piye chay]
she will drink water тя ще пие вода [tya shtye piye voda]
we will drink apple juice ние ще пием ябълков сок [niye shtye piyem yabʲlkov sok]
they will drink tea те ще пият чай [tye shtye piyat chay]

Can I help you? Мога ли да ви помогна? [Mogua li da vi pomoguna?]
Where is the airport? Къде е летището? [Kʲdye ye lyetishtyeto?]
Go straight Вървете направо [Vʲrvyetye napravo]
Then тогава/след това [toguava/slyed tova]
Turn left завийте вляво [zaviytye vlyavo]
Turn right завийте вдясно [zaviytye vdyasno]
