Assamese Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Assamese. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Assamese.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Assamese conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Assamese - Pronunciation
I speak English মই ইংৰাজী কওঁ। [Ma'i iṁraājī ka'ōm̐.]
you speak French আপুনি ফৰাছীভাষা কয়। [Āpuni pharaāchībhāṣā kaẏa.]
he speaks German তেখেতে জাৰ্মান কয়। [Tēkhētē jārmāna kaẏa.]
she speaks Italian তেখেতে ইটালীয় ভাষা কয়। [Tēkhētē iṭālīẏa bhāṣā kaẏa.]
we speak Arabic আমি আৰবী কওঁ। [Āmi ārabī ka'ōm̐.]
they speak Chinese তেখেতসকলে চীনাভাষা কয়। [Tēkhētasakalē cīnābhāṣā kaẏa.]

The past tense in Assamese conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Assamese - Pronunciation
I visited France আমি ফ্রান্স ভ্রমন কৰিছোঁ। | আমি ফ্রান্সলৈ গৈছো। [Āmi phrānsa bhramana karaichōm̐. | Āmi phrānsalai gaichō.]
you visited Italy আপুনি ইটালীলৈ গৈছে। [Āpuni iṭālīlai gaichē.]
he visited Morocco তেখেত মৰক্কোলৈ গৈছে। [Tēkhēta marakkōlai gaichē.]
she visited China তেখেত চীনলৈ গৈছে। [Tēkhēta cīnalai gaichē.]
we visited Mexico আমি মেক্সিকোলৈ গৈছো। [Āmi mēksikōlai gaichō.]
they visited Kenya তেখেতসকলে কেনীয়ালৈ গৈছে। [Tēkhētasakalē kēnīẏālai gaichē.]

The future tense in Assamese conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Assamese - Pronunciation
I will drink milk মই গাখীৰ খাওঁ। [Ma'i gākhīra khā'ōm̐.]
you will drink coffee আপুনি কফি খায়। [Āpuni kaphi khāẏa.]
he will drink tea তেখেতে চাহ খাব। [Tēkhētē cāha khāba.]
she will drink water তেখেতে পানী খাব। [Tēkhētē pānī khāba.]
we will drink apple juice আমি আপেলৰ ৰস খাম। [Āmi āpēlara rasa khāma.]
they will drink tea তেখেতসকলে চাহ খাব। [Tēkhētasakalē cāha khāba.]

Turn left বাওঁফালে ঘূৰক। [Bā'ōm̐phālē ghūraka.]
Turn right সোফালে ঘূৰক। [Sōphālē ghūraka.]
