Punjabi Nouns

Welcome to the third Punjabi lesson about nouns. This time we will first learn about fruits and vegetables, followed by grammar rules, then food items, finally a conversation in Punjabi to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

potatoes ਆਲੂ [ālū]

tomatoes ਟਮਾਟਰ [ṭamāṭara]

onions ਪਆਿਜ਼ [paā̔iza]

carrots ਗਾਜਰ [gājara]

fruits ਫਲ [phala]

apples ਸੇਬ [sēba]

bananas ਕੇਲਾ [kēlā]

oranges ਸੰਤਰਾ [satarā]

Nouns Grammar Rules

In general nouns refer to a person, an object, or abstract ideas. For example: a fast runner the noun is [runner] because it refers to a person. The examples below use nouns in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar + Rules - Punjabi + Pronunciation
do you have milk? [verb + noun] ਕੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਦੁੱਧ ਹੈ? [kī tuhāḍē kōla dudha hai?]
I have milk and coffee [preposition + noun] ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਦੁੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਫੀ ਹੈ [mērē kōla dudha atē kauphī hai]
he has three apples [number + plural noun] ਓਸ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਤਿੰਨ ਸੇਬ ਹਨ [ōsa muḍē kōla tina sēba hana]
she only has one apple [number + singular noun] ਓਸ ਕੁੜੀ ਕੋਲ ਸਿਰਫ ਇੱਕੋ ਸੇਬ ਹੈ [ōsa kuṛī kōla sirapha ikō sēba hai]
we live in a small house [adjective + noun] ਅਸੀਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਘਰ 'ਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ [asīṁ chōṭē jihē ghara 'ca rahidē hāṁ]
I like our breakfast [pronoun + noun] ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਨਾਸ਼ਤਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ [mainū sāḍā nāśatā pasada hai]

The following are nouns of food items that you might be interested in learning and memorizing.

bread ਡਬਲਰੋਟੀ [ḍabalarōṭī]

milk ਦੁੱਧ [dudha]

butter ਮੱਖਣ [makhaṇa]

cheese ਪਨੀਰ [panīra]

coffee ਕੌਫੀ [kauphī]

sandwich ਸੈਂਂਡਵਚਿ [saiṁṇḍavaci]

meat ਮਾਸ [māsa]

chicken ਕੁੱਕਡ਼ [kukaṛa]

fish ਮੱਛੀ [machī]

breakfast ਨਾਸ਼ਤਾ [nāśatā]

lunch ਦੋਪਹਰ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ [dōpahara dā khāṇā]

dinner ਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ [rāta dā khāṇā]

Conversation in Punjabi

Now we finally reach the fun part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.

Do you speak (English/ Punjabi)? ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ (ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ/ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ? [kī tusīṁ (agarēzī / pajābī) bōla sakadē hō?]
Just a little ਥੋੜੀ ਜਿਹੀ [thōṛī jihī]
I like Punjabi ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ [mainū pajābī pasada hai]
Can I practice with you? ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂ? [kī maiṁ tuhāḍē nāla abhi'āsa kara lavāṁ?]
How old are you? ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਕੀ ਹੈ? [tuhāḍī umara kī hai?]
I'm thirty three years old ਮੈਂ ਤੇਤੀ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਹਾਂ [maiṁ tētī sāla dā hāṁ]
It was nice talking to you ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ [tuhāḍē nāla gala kara kē cagā lagi'ā]
