Tamil Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Tamil. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Tamil.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Tamil conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Tamil - Pronunciation
I speak English நான் ஆங்கிலம் பேசுகிறேன் [nān āngilam pesukiren]
you speak French நீங்கள் பிரெஞ்சு பேசுகிறீர்கள் [neengal pirenju pesukireerkal]
he speaks German அவர் ஜெர்மன் பேசுகிறார் [avar jerman pesukirār]
she speaks Italian அவள் இத்தாலியம் பேசுகிறாள் [aval iththāliyam pesukirāl]
we speak Arabic நாங்கள் அரபு பேசுகிறோம் [nāngal arapu pesukirom]
they speak Chinese அவர்கள் சீனம் பேசுகிறார்கள் [avarkal seenam pesukirārkal]

The past tense in Tamil conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Tamil - Pronunciation
I visited France நான் பிரான்ஸ் சென்றிருந்தேன் [nān pirāns sendrirundhen]
you visited Italy நீங்கள் இத்தாலி சென்றிருந்தீர்கள் [neengal iththāli sendrirundheerkal]
he visited Morocco அவர் மொராக்கோ சென்றிருந்தார் [avar morākko sendrirundhār]
she visited China அவள் சீனா சென்றிருந்தாள் [aval seenā sendrirundhāl]
we visited Mexico நாங்கள் மெக்ஸிக்கோ சென்றிருந்தோம் [nāngal meksikko sendrirundhom]
they visited Kenya அவர்கள் கென்யா சென்றிருந்தார்கள் [avarkal kenyā sendrirundhārkal]

The future tense in Tamil conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Tamil - Pronunciation
I will drink milk நான் பால் குடிப்பேன் [nān pāl kutippen]
you will drink coffee நீங்கள் காபி குடிப்பீர்கள் [neengal kāpi kutippeerkal]
he will drink tea அவர் டீ குடிப்பார் [avar tee kutippār]
she will drink water அவள் தண்ணீர் குடிப்பாள் [aval thanneer kutippāl]
we will drink apple juice நாங்கள் ஆப்பிள் ஜூஸ் குடிப்போம் [nāngal āppil joos kutippom]
they will drink tea அவர்கள் டீ குடிப்பார்கள் [avarkal tee kutippārkal]

Travel Phrases in Tamil

Imagine yourself in some Tamil speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Tamil - Pronunciation
Can you help me? உன்னால் எனக்கு உதவ முடியுமா? [unnāl enakku udhava mutiyumā?]
Can I help you? நான் உங்களுக்கு உதவி செய்யட்டுமா? [nān ungalukku udhavi seyyattumā?]
Where is the airport? விமான நிலையம் எங்கே உள்ளது? [vimāna nilaiyam enge ulladhu?]
Go straight நேராக செல்லுங்கள் [nerāka sellungal]
Then பிறகு [piraku]
Turn left இடது பக்கம் திரும்புங்கள் [itadhu pakkam thirumpungal]
Turn right வலது பக்கம் திரும்புங்கள் [valadhu pakkam thirumpungal]
