Tamil Numbers

Welcome to the sixth Tamil lesson about numbers. This time we will learn about cardinal and ordinal numbers, followed by grammar rules, then animal names, finally a conversation in Tamil to help you practice your daily phrases. Click on the sound icon to hear the words.

Numbers Grammar Rules

Tamil cardinal numbers refer to the counting numbers, because they show quantity. For example: I speak two languages. Ordinal numbers on the other hand tell the order of things and their rank: my first language is Tamil. The examples below use numbers in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

I have three dogs [number + noun]	நான் மூன்று நாய்கள் வைத்திருக்கிறேன் [nān moondru nāikal vaiththirukkiren]
my daughter has two cats [number + noun]	என் மகள் இரண்டு பூனைகள் வைத்திருக்கிறாள் [en makal irantu poonaikal vaiththirukkirāl]
she speaks seven languages [verb + number]	அவள் ஏழு மொழிகளில் பேசுகிறாள் [aval ezhu mozhikalil pesukirāl]
my brother has one son [number + singular noun]	என் சகோதரருக்கு ஒரு மகன் உண்டு [en sakodhararukku oru makan untu]
this is my second lesson [ordinal number + noun]	இது என் இரண்டாவது பாடம் [idhu en irantāvadhu pātam]
did you read the third book? [ordinal number + noun]	நீங்கள் மூன்றாவது புத்தகம் படித்தீர்களா? [neengal moondrāvadhu puththakam patiththeerkalā?]

Now we finally reach the last part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.
