Kurdish Nouns

Welcome to the third Kurdish lesson about nouns. This time we will first learn about fruits and vegetables, followed by grammar rules, then food items, finally a conversation in Kurdish to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

potatoes په‌تاته‌ [patata]

tomatoes ته‌ماته‌ [tamata]

onions پیاز [pyaz]

carrots گێزه‌ر [gezar]

fruits میوه‌ [meewa]

apples سێو [sew]

bananas مۆز [moz]

oranges پرته‌قاڵ [prtaqal]

Nouns Grammar Rules

In general nouns refer to a person, an object, or abstract ideas. For example: a fast runner the noun is [runner] because it refers to a person. The examples below use nouns in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar + Rules - Kurdish + Pronunciation
do you have milk? [verb + noun] شیرت هەیە؟ [sheert haya?]
I have milk and coffee [preposition + noun] شیرو قاوەم هەیە [sheer w qawam haya]
he has three apples [number + plural noun] ئەو سێ سێوی پێیە [aw se sewy peya]
she only has one apple [number + singular noun] ئەو یەک سێوی پێیە [ae yek sewy peya]
we live in a small house [adjective + noun] ئێمە لە خانوویەکی بچووکدا دەژین [ema le khanwyaky bchwkda dazheen]
I like our breakfast [pronoun + noun] حەزم لە نانی بەیانیمانە [hazm le nany beyanimana]

The following are nouns of food items that you might be interested in learning and memorizing.

bread نان [nan]

milk شیر [sheer]

butter که‌ره‌ [kere]

cheese په‌نیر [peneer]

coffee قاوە [qawa]

sandwich پاروو [parw]

meat گۆشت [gosht]

chicken مریشک [mrishk]

fish ماسی [masy]

breakfast نانی به‌یانی [nany bayany]

lunch نانی نیوه‌ڕۆ [nany newaro]

dinner نانی ئێواره‌ [nany ewara]

Conversation in Kurdish

Now we finally reach the fun part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.

Do you speak (English/ Kurdish)? ئایا زمانی (ئینگلیزی/کوردی) قسە دەکەیت؟ [aya zmany (englizy/kurdy) qse dekety?]
Just a little تەنها کەمەکێک [tenha kemekek]
I like Kurdish حەزم لە کوردییە [hazm le kurdya]
Can I practice with you? ئایا دەتوانم خۆم فێربکەم لەگەڵ تۆ؟ [aya datwanm khom fer bkem legel to?]
How old are you? تۆ تەمەنت چەندە؟ [to tement chanda?]
I'm thirty three years old من تەمەنم سی و سێ ساڵە [mn temenm sy w se sale]
It was nice talking to you خۆشحاڵ بووم بە قسەکردن لەگەڵت [khoshhalm bwm be qse krdin legelt]
