Kurdish Adjectives

Welcome to the second Kurdish lesson about adjectives. This time we will first learn about colors, followed by grammar rules, then weather expressions, finally a conversation in Kurdish to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

black ره‌ش [resh]

grey خۆڵه‌مێشی [kholameshy]

white سپی [speey]

blue شین [sheen]

green سه‌وز [sawz]

yellow زه‌رد [zerd]

red سور [swr]

brown قاوه‌یی [qawayee]

Adjectives Grammar Rules

In general adjectives are words which describe or modify another person or object in a given sentence. For example: a beautiful flower the adjective is [beautiful] because it describes the noun [flower]. The following examples use adjectives in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar Rules - Kurdish + Pronunciation
my house is white [noun + adjective] خانووەکەم سپییە [khanwakam speeya]
your country is big [noun + adjective] ووڵاتەکەت گەروەیە [wlatakat gawraya]
new books are expensive [plural + adjective] کتێبە نوێکان گرانن [kteba nwekan grann]
we are happy here [pronoun + verb + adjective] ئێمە شادمانین لێرە [ema shadmaneen lera]
she has three small dogs [adjective + plural] ئەو سێ سەگی بچکۆلەی هەیە [aw se sagy haya]
this language is very easy [adverb + adjective] ئەم زمانە زۆر ئاسانە [am zmana zor asana]
I have a small green house [adjective + adjective] من خانوویەکی سەوزی بچکۆلەم هەیە [mn khanwyaky sawzy bchkolam haya]

We're not done yet! The following is a list of more adjectives for you, often used when referring to weather conditions. I think it would be wise to memorize them.

cold سارد [sard]

hot گه‌رم [garm]

cloudy هه‌وراوی [hawrawy]

rainy باراناوی [baranawy]

snowy بەفراوی [bafrawy]

sunny خۆره‌تاو [khorataw]

windy بای هەیە [bay haya]

warm شلەتێن [shlaten]

Conversation in Kurdish

Now we finally reach the most exciting part, the practice of the daily expressions used in almost every conversation. I recommend memorizing these phrases, because you will need them for sure.

English - Kurdish - Pronunciation
hi چۆنی [chony?]
how are you? لە چییای؟ [le chyay?]
I'm good, thank you من باشم، سوپاست دەکەم [mn bashim, swpast dakam]
and you? ئەی تۆ؟ [ay to?]
what is your name? ناوت چییە؟ [nawt chya?]
my name is Maya من ناوم مایایە [mn nawm mayaya]
nice to meet you خۆشحاڵم بە ناسینت [khoshhalm be nasint]
