Japanese Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Japanese. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Japanese.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Japanese conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Japanese - Pronunciation
I speak English 私は英語を話します。 [watashi wa eigo o hanashi masu] Audio
you speak French あなたはフランス語を話します。 [anata wa furansugo o hanashi masu] Audio
he speaks German 彼はドイツ語を話します。 [kare wa doitsu go o hanashi masu] Audio
she speaks Italian 彼女はイタリア語を話します。 [kanojo wa itaria go o hanashi masu] Audio
we speak Arabic 私たちはアラビア語を話します。 [watashi tachi wa arabia go o hanashi masu] Audio
they speak Chinese 彼らは中国語を話します。 [karera wa chuugokugo o hanashi masu] Audio

The past tense in Japanese conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

I visited France 私はフランスに行きました。 [watashi wa furansu ni iki mashi ta] Audio
you visited Italy あなたはイタリアに行きました。 [anata wa itaria ni iki mashi ta] Audio
he visited Morocco 彼はモロッコに行きました。 [kare wa morokko ni iki mashi ta] Audio

The future tense in Japanese conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

I will drink milk 私は牛乳を飲みます。 [watashi wa gyuunyuu o nomi masu] Audio
you will drink coffee あなたはコーヒーを飲みます。 [anata wa kōhī o nomi masu] Audio
he will drink tea 彼は紅茶を飲みます。 [kare wa koucha o nomi masu] Audio
she will drink water 彼女は水を飲みます。 [kanojo wa mizu o nomi masu] Audio
