Chinese Adjectives

Welcome to the second Chinese lesson about adjectives. This time we will first learn about colors, followed by grammar rules, then weather expressions, finally a conversation in Chinese to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

black 黑色 [hēi sè]

grey 灰色 [huī sè]

white 白色 [bái sè]

blue 蓝色 [lán sè]

green 绿色 [lǜ sè]

yellow 黄色 [huáng sè]

red 红色 [hóng sè]

brown 棕色 [zōng sè]

Adjectives Grammar Rules

In general adjectives are words which describe or modify another person or object in a given sentence. For example: a beautiful flower the adjective is [beautiful] because it describes the noun [flower]. The following examples use adjectives in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar Rules - Chinese + Pronunciation
my house is white [noun + adjective] 我的房子是白色的 [wǒ de fáng zi shì bái sè de]
your country is big [noun + adjective] 你的国家很大 [nǐ de guó jiā hěn dà]
new books are expensive [plural + adjective] 新书是昂贵的 [xīn shū shì áng guì de]
we are happy here [pronoun + verb + adjective] 我们在这里很高兴 [wǒ men zài zhè lǐ hěn gāo xìng]
she has three small dogs [adjective + plural] 她有三只小狗 [tā yǒu sān zhǐ xiǎo gǒu]
this language is very easy [adverb + adjective] 这种语言非常容易 [zhè zhǒng yǔ yán fēi cháng róng yì]
I have a small green house [adjective + adjective] 我有一个绿色的小房子 [wǒ yǒu yī gè lǜ sè de xiǎo fáng zi]

We're not done yet! The following is a list of more adjectives for you, often used when referring to weather conditions. I think it would be wise to memorize them.

cold 冷 [lěng]

hot 热 [rè]

cloudy 多云 [duō yún]

rainy 下雨的 [xià yǔ de]

snowy 下雪的 [xià xuě de]

sunny 晴朗 [qíng lǎng]

windy 有风 [yǒu fēng]

warm 温暖 [wēn nuǎn]

Conversation in Chinese

Now we finally reach the most exciting part, the practice of the daily expressions used in almost every conversation. I recommend memorizing these phrases, because you will need them for sure.

English - Chinese - Pronunciation
hi 您好 [nín hǎo]
how are you? 你好吗？ [nǐ hǎo ma?]
I'm good, thank you 我很好，谢谢 [wǒ hěn hǎo, xiè xiè]
and you? 你呢？ [nǐ ní?]
what is your name? 你叫什么名字？ [nǐ jiào shén mē míng zì?]
my name is Maya 我的名字叫玛雅 [wǒ de míng zì jiào mǎ yǎ]
nice to meet you 很高兴认识你 [hěn gāo xìng rèn shí nǐ]
