Telugu Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Telugu. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Telugu.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Telugu conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Telugu - Pronunciation
I speak English నేను ఆంగ్లం మాట్లాడలేని [Nēnu āṅglaṁ māṭlāḍalēni]
you speak French మీరు ఫ్రెంచ్ మాట్లాడటం [Mīru phren̄c māṭlāḍaṭaṁ]
he speaks German అతను జర్మన్ భాష మాట్లాడు గలడు [Atanu jarman bhāṣa māṭlāḍu galaḍu]
she speaks Italian ఆమె ఇటాలియన్ మాట్లాడుతుంది [Āme iṭāliyan māṭlāḍutundi]
we speak Arabic మేము అరబిక్ మాట్లాడటం [Mēmu arabik māṭlāḍaṭaṁ]
they speak Chinese వారు చైనీస్ మాట్లాడటం [Vāru cainīs māṭlāḍaṭaṁ]

The past tense in Telugu conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Telugu - Pronunciation
I visited France నేను ఫ్రాన్స్ సందర్శించిన [Nēnu phrāns sandarśin̄cina]
you visited Italy మీరు ఇటలీ సందర్శించిన [Mīru iṭalī sandarśin̄cina]
he visited Morocco అతను మొరాక్కో సందర్శించిన [Atanu morākkō sandarśin̄cina]
she visited China ఆమె చైనా సందర్శించారు [Āme cainā sandarśin̄cāru]
we visited Mexico మేము మెక్సికో సందర్శించిన [Mēmu meksikō sandarśin̄cina]
they visited Kenya వారు కెన్యా సందర్శించిన [Vāru ken'yā sandarśin̄cina]

The future tense in Telugu conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Telugu - Pronunciation
I will drink milk నేను పాలు త్రాగడానికి చేస్తుంది [Nēnu pālu trāgaḍāniki cēstundi]
you will drink coffee మీరు కాఫీ త్రాగటానికి కావలసిన [Mīru kāphī trāgaṭāniki kāvalasina]
he will drink tea అతను టీ త్రాగడానికి విల్ [Atanu ṭī trāgaḍāniki vil]
she will drink water ఆమె నీరు త్రాగటం విల్ [Āme nīru trāgaṭaṁ vil]
we will drink apple juice మేము ఆపిల్ రసం త్రాగడానికి కావలసిన [Mēmu āpil rasaṁ trāgaḍāniki kāvalasina]
they will drink tea వారు టీ త్రాగడానికి కావలసిన [Vāru ṭī trāgaḍāniki kāvalasina]

Travel Phrases in Telugu

Imagine yourself in some Telugu speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Telugu - Pronunciation
Can you help me? నువ్వు నాకు సహాయం చేయగలరు? [Nuvvu nāku sahāyaṁ cēyagalaru?]
Can I help you? నేను మీకు సహాయం చేయనా? [Nēnu mīku sahāyaṁ cēyanā?]
Where is the airport? విమానాశ్రయం ఎక్కడ ఉంది? [Vimānāśrayaṁ ekkaḍa undi?]
Go straight నేరుగా వెళ్ళు [Nērugā veḷḷu]
Then అప్పుడు [Appuḍu]
Turn left ఎడమకు తిరగండి [Eḍamaku tiragaṇḍi]
Turn right కుడికి తిరగండి [Kuḍiki tiragaṇḍi]
