Telugu Gender

Welcome to the fifth Telugu lesson about gender. This time we will view a list of people, feminine and masculine, followed by grammar rules, finally a list of expressions in Telugu to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

man మనిషి,మగవాడు [Maniṣi, magavāḍu]

woman స్త్రీ ఆడది [Strī āḍadi]

husband భర్త,మగడు [Bharta, magaḍu]

wife భార్య,కళత్రం.పెళ్ళాం [Bhārya, kaḷatraṁ. Peḷḷāṁ]

boy బాలుడు [Bāluḍu]

girl బాలిక [Bālika]

father తండ్రి [Taṇḍri]

mother తల్లి [Talli]

Gender Grammar Rules

In general, gender is used to distinguish between male and female, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine. For example: my son and daughter are students the noun [son] is masculine, while [daughter] is feminine. The following examples use gender in different ways and places to demonstrate their behavior.

Grammar + Rules - Telugu + Pronunciation
my son is a student [masculine + noun] నా కొడుకు ఒక విద్యార్థి [Nā koḍuku oka vidyārthi]
her daughter is a student [feminine + noun] ఆమె కుమార్తె ఒక విద్యార్థిని [Āme kumārte oka vidyārthini]
he has a tall brother [adjective + masculine] అతను ఒక పొడవైన సోదరుడు ఉన్నారు [Atanu oka poḍavaina sōdaruḍu unnāru]
she has a tall sister [adjective + feminine] ఆమె ఒక పొడవైన సోదరి ఉంది [Āme oka poḍavaina sōdari undi]
his brothers are young [plural masculine + adjective] తన సోదరులు యువ ఉంటాయి [Tana sōdarulu yuva uṇṭāyi]
his sisters are young [plural feminine + adjective] తన సోదరీమణులు యువ ఉంటాయి [Tana sōdarīmaṇulu yuva uṇṭāyi]

The list below will probably provide more clarification. These are family members (males and females). I think it would be wise to memorize them as part of your important vocabulary list.

son పుత్రిక,కూతురు [Putrika, kūturu]

daughter పుత్రిక,కూతురు [Putrika, kūturu]

brother సోదరిడు [Sōdariḍu]

sister సోదరి [Sōdari]

grandfather తాత [Tāta]

grandmother అమ్మమ్మ(అమ్మకు అమ్మ),అవ్వ,మామ్మ(తండ్రికి అమ్మ) [Am'mam'ma (am'maku am'ma), avva, mām'ma (taṇḍriki am'ma)]

child లోహపు పలక [Lōhapu palaka]

children పిల్లలు [Pillalu]

Now it's time to practice expressions used in daily conversations. If you're a beginner in learning Telugu, then the phrases below are something you would want to know.
