Romanian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Romanian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Romanian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Romanian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Romanian
I speak English eu vorbesc engleza
you speak French vorbiţi franceza
he speaks German el vorbeşte germana
she speaks Italian ea vorbeşte italiană
we speak Arabic noi vorbim arabă
they speak Chinese ei vorbesc chineză

The past tense in Romanian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Romanian
I visited France eu am vizitat Franţa
you visited Italy tu ai vizitat Italia
he visited Morocco el a vizitat Marocul
she visited China ea a vizitat China
we visited Mexico noi am vizitat Mexicul
they visited Kenya ei au vizitat Kenya

The future tense in Romanian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Romanian
I will drink milk eu voi bea lapte
you will drink coffee tu vei bea cafea
he will drink tea el va bea ceai
she will drink water ea va bea apă
we will drink apple juice noi vom bea suc de mere
they will drink tea ei vor bea ceai

Imagine yourself in some Romanian speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

Can you help me? mă poţi ajuta?
Can I help you? cu ce te pot ajuta?
Where is the airport? unde este aeroportul?
Go straight mergi drept
Then apoi
Turn left ia-o la stânga
Turn right ia-o la dreapta
