Welcome to the third Malayalam lesson about nouns. This time we will first learn about fruits and vegetables, followed by grammar rules, then food items, finally a conversation in Malayalam to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

potatoes ഉരുളകിഴങ്ങ് [uru ḷekiḻenen]

tomatoes തക്കാളി [thekkaḷei]

onions ഉള്ളി [uḷeḷei]

carrots കാരറ്റ്‌ [kareṟeṟe‌]

fruits പഴം [peḻe']

apples ആപ്പിള്‍ [apepeiḷe‍]

bananas വാഴപ്പഴം [vaḻepepeḻe']

oranges ഓറഞ്ചു [oṟeñechu]

Nouns Grammar Rules

In general nouns refer to a person, an object, or abstract ideas. For example: a fast runner the noun is [runner] because it refers to a person. The examples below use nouns in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar + Rules - Malayalam + Pronunciation
do you have milk? [verb + noun] പാല് കുടിക്കുന്നോ? [pale ku ṭeikku neno?]
I have milk and coffee [preposition + noun] പാലുള്ള കാപ്പി [palu ḷeḷe kapepei]
he has three apples [number + plural noun] അയാളുടെ പക്കല്‍ മുന്ന് ആപ്പിള്‍ ഉണ്ട് [ayaḷu ṭe pekkle‍ mu nene apepeiḷe‍ uṇeṭ]
she only has one apple [number + singular noun] അവളുടെ പക്കല്‍ ഒരാപ്ലെ ഒള്ളു [aveḷu ṭe pekkle‍ orapele oḷeḷu]
we live in a small house [adjective + noun] ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ വീട്ടില്‍ താമസിക്കുന്നു [ñeneneḷe‍ oru cheṟeiye vīṭeṭeile‍ thameseikku nenu]
I like our breakfast [pronoun + noun] എനിക്ക് നമ്മുടെ പ്രാതല്‍ ഇഷ്ടപെട്ടു [eneikk nememu ṭe perathele‍ isśeṭepeṭeṭu]

The following are nouns of food items that you might be interested in learning and memorizing.

bread റൊട്ടി [ṟoṭeṭei]

milk പാല് [pal]

butter വെണ്ണ [veṇeṇ]

cheese പനീര്‍ [penīre‍]

coffee കാപ്പി [kapepei]

sandwich സാന്ത്വിച് [sanetheveich]

meat ഇറച്ചി [iṟechchi]

chicken കോഴി [koḻei]

fish മീന്‍ [mīne‍]

breakfast പ്രാതല്‍ [perathele‍]

lunch ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണം [uchchbheksśeṇe']

dinner അത്താഴം [athethaḻe']

Conversation in Malayalam

Now we finally reach the fun part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.
