Kannada Nouns

Welcome to the third Kannada lesson about nouns. This time we will first learn about fruits and vegetables, followed by grammar rules, then food items, finally a conversation in Kannada to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

potatoes ಆಲುಗಡ್ಡೆ [Ālugaḍḍe]

tomatoes ಟೊಮೇಟೊ [Ṭomēṭo]

onions ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ [Īruḷḷi]

carrots ಕ್ಯಾರೆಟ್ [Kyāreṭ]

fruits ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳು [Haṇṇugaḷu]

apples ಸೇಬು [Sēbu]

bananas ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು [Bāḷehaṇṇu]

oranges ಕಿತ್ತಳೆ ಹಣ್ಣು [Kittaḷe haṇṇu]

Nouns Grammar Rules

In general nouns refer to a person, an object, or abstract ideas. For example: a fast runner the noun is [runner] because it refers to a person. The examples below use nouns in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

do you have milk? [verb + noun] ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹಾಲು ಇದೆಯಾ [Nim'ma hattira hālu ideyā]
I have milk and coffee [preposition + noun] ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಫಿ ಇದೆ [Nanna hattira hālu mattu kāphi ide]
he has three apples [number + plural noun] ಅವನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಮೂರು ಸೇಬು ಇವೆ [Avana hattira mūru sēbu ive]
she only has one apple [number + singular noun] ಅವಳ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಸೇಬು ಇದೆ [Avaḷa hattira kēvala ondu sēbu ide]
we live in a small house [adjective + noun] ನಾವು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ಹೇವೆ [Nāvu ondu saṇṇa maneyalli vāsisut'hēve]
I like our breakfast [pronoun + noun] ನನಗೆ ನಾಷ್ಟ ತುಂಬ ಇಷ್ಟ [Nanage nāṣṭa tumba iṣṭa]

The following are nouns of food items that you might be interested in learning and memorizing.

bread ಬ್ರೆಡ್ಡು [Breḍḍu]

milk ಹಾಲು [Hālu]

butter ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ [Beṇṇe]

cheese ಚೀಸ್ [Cīs]

coffee ಕಾಫಿ [Kāphi]

sandwich ಸ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ವಿಚ್ [Syāṇḍ vic]

meat ಮಾಂಸ [Mānsa]

chicken ಕೋಳಿ ಮಾಂಸ [Kōḷi mānsa]

fish ಮೀನು [Mīnu]

breakfast ನಾಷ್ಟ [Nāṣṭa]

lunch ಊಟ [Ūṭa]

dinner ರಾತ್ರಿ ಊಟ [Rātri ūṭa]

Conversation in Kannada

Now we finally reach the fun part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.

Do you speak (English/ Kannada)? ನೀವು ಕನ್ನಡ / ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮಾತನಾಡುತಿರ [Nīvu kannaḍa/ iṅgliṣ mātanāḍutira]

I like Kannada ನಂಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಇಷ್ಟ [Naṅge kannaḍa iṣṭa]
Can I practice with you? ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕಲಿಯಬಹುದೇ [Nānu nim'ma hattira kaliyabahudē]
How old are you? ನಿಮಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ವರ್ಷ [Nimage eṣṭu varṣa]
I'm thirty three years old ನನ್ನಗೆ ಮೂವತಮೂರು ವರ್ಷ [Nannage mūvatamūru varṣa]
