Hindi Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Hindi. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Hindi.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Hindi conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Hindi - Pronunciation
I speak English मैं अंग्रेजी बोलता(m) /बोलती (f) हूँ | [main angareji boltaa(m) /bolti (f) hun |]
you speak French तुम/ आप ( you) फ्रेंच बोलते हो /हैं | [tum/ aap ( you) frenk bolte ho /hain |]
he speaks German वह जर्मन बोलता है | [vh jrmn boltaa hai |]
she speaks Italian वह इतालवी बोलती है | [vh itaalvi bolti hai |]
we speak Arabic हम अरबी (भाषा )बोलते हैं [hm arbi (bhaasaa )bolte hain]
they speak Chinese वे चीनी(भाषा ) बोलते हैं | [ve kini(bhaasaa ) bolte hain |]

The past tense in Hindi conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Hindi - Pronunciation
I visited France मैने फ्रांस का दौरा किया | [maine fraans kaa dauraa kiyaa |]
you visited Italy आपने इटली का दौरा किया | [aapne itli kaa dauraa kiyaa |]
he visited Morocco उसने मोरक्को का दौरा किया | [usne morkko kaa dauraa kiyaa |]
she visited China उसने चीन का दौरा किया | [usne kin kaa dauraa kiyaa |]
we visited Mexico हमने मेक्सिको का दौरा किया | [hmne meksiko kaa dauraa kiyaa |]
they visited Kenya उन्होनें केन्या का दौरा किया | [unhonen kenyaa kaa dauraa kiyaa |]

The future tense in Hindi conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Hindi - Pronunciation
I will drink milk मैं दूध पीना पीऊँगा | [main dudh pinaa pioongaaa |]
you will drink coffee तुम/ आप कॉफी पीना चाहता हो /हैं | [tum/ aap kofi pinaa kaahtaa ho /hain |]
he will drink tea वह चाय पीएगा | [vh kaay piegaaa |]
she will drink water वह पानी पीने पीयेगी | [vh paani pine piyegai |]
we will drink apple juice हम सेब का रस पीना चाहेंगे | [hm seb kaa rs pinaa kaahengae |]
they will drink tea वे चाय पीना चाहेंगे | [ve kaay pinaa kaahengae |]

Travel Phrases in Hindi

Imagine yourself in some Hindi speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Hindi - Pronunciation
Can you help me? क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकते (m) / सकती (f) हैं? [kyaa aap meri mdd kr skte (m) / skti (f) hain?]
Can I help you? क्या मैं आपकी मदद कर सकता (m) / सकती (f) हूँ? [kyaa main aapki mdd kr sktaa (m) / skti (f) hun?]
Where is the airport? हवाई अड्डा कहाँ है? [hvaai addaa khaan hai?]
Go straight सीधे जाइये | [sidhe jaaiye |]
Then फिर [fir]
Turn left बाएँ मुङिये | [baaen mungiye |]
Turn right दाहिने मुङिये | [daahine mungiye |]
