Georgian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Georgian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Georgian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Georgian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Georgian - Pronunciation
I speak English მე ვსაუბრობ ინგლისურად [me vsaubrob inglisurad]
you speak French თქვენ საუბრობთ ფრანგულად [tkven saubrobt prangulad]
he speaks German იგი საუბრობს გერმანულად [igi saubrobs germanulad]
she speaks Italian იგი საუბრობს იტალიურად [igi saubrobs it'aliurad]
we speak Arabic ჩვენ ვსაუბრობთ არაბულად [chven vsaubrobt arabulad]
they speak Chinese ისინი საუბრობენ ჩინურად [isini saubroben chinurad]

The past tense in Georgian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

I visited France მე ვიყავი საფრანგეთში [me viqavi saprangetshi]
you visited Italy თქვენ ეწვიეთ იტალიას [tkven ets'viet it'alias]
he visited Morocco იგი მაროკოს ეწვია [igi marok'os ets'via]
she visited China იგი იმყოფებოდა ჩინეთში [igi imqopeboda chinetshi]
we visited Mexico ჩვენ ვიმყოფებოდით მექსიკაში [chven vimqopebodit meksik'ashi]
they visited Kenya მათ მოინახულეს კენია [mat moinakhules k'enia]

The future tense in Georgian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Georgian - Pronunciation
I will drink milk მე დავლევ რძეს [me davlev rdzes]
you will drink coffee შენ დალევ ყავას [shend alev qavas]
he will drink tea ის დალევს ჩაის [is dalevs chais]
she will drink water ის დალევს წყალს [is dalevs ts'qals]
we will drink apple juice ჩვენ დავლევთ ვაშლის წვენს [chven davlevt vashlis ts'vens]
they will drink tea ისინი დალევენ ჩაის [isini daleven chais]

Imagine yourself in some Georgian speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

Can you help me? შეგიძლია დამეხმარო? [shegidzlia damekhmaro?]
Can I help you? დახმარება ხომ არ გინდა? [dakhmareba xom ar ginda?]
Where is the airport? სად არის აეროპორტი? [sad aris aerop'ort'i?]
Go straight იარეთ პირდაპირ [iaret p'irdap'ir]
Then შემდეგ [shemdeg]
Turn left მოუხვიეთ მარცხნივ [moukhviet martskhniv]
Turn right მოუხვიეთ მარჯვნივ [moukhviet marjvniv]
