Bengali Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Bengali. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Bengali.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Bengali conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Bengali - Pronunciation
I speak English আমি ইংরাজিতে কথা বলি [āmi inrājitē kathā bali]
you speak French আপনি ফরাসিতে কথা বলেন [āpani pharāsitē kathā balēna]
he speaks German তিনি জার্মান ভাষায কথা বলেন [tini jārmāna bhāṣāya kathā balēna]
she speaks Italian সে ইতালিয় ভাষায় কথা বলে [sē itāliẏa bhāṣāẏa kathā balē]
we speak Arabic আমরা আরবিতে কথা বলি [āmarā ārabitē kathā bali]
they speak Chinese তারা চীনা ভাষায় কথা বলেন [tārā cīnā bhāṣāẏa kathā balēna]

The past tense in Bengali conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Bengali - Pronunciation
I visited France আমি ফ্রান্সে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলাম [āmi phrānsē bēṛātē giẏēchilāma]
you visited Italy আপনি ইতালিতে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলেন [āpani itālitē bēṛātē giẏēchilēna]
he visited Morocco তিনি মরক্কোতে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলেন [tini marakkōtē bēṛātē giẏēchilēna]
she visited China তিনি চীনে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলেন [tini cīnē bēṛātē giẏēchilēna]
we visited Mexico আমরা মেক্সিকোতে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলাম [āmarā mēksikōtē bēṛātē giẏēchilāma]
they visited Kenya তারা কেনিয়াতে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলেন [tārā kēniẏātē bēṛātē giẏēchilēna]

The future tense in Bengali conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Bengali - Pronunciation
I will drink milk আমি দুধ পান করবো [āmi dudha pāna karabō]
you will drink coffee আপনি কফি পান করবেন [āpani kaphi pāna karabēna]
he will drink tea তিনি চা পান করবেন [tini cā pāna karabēna]
she will drink water তিনি জল পান করবেন [tini jala pāna karabēna]
we will drink apple juice আমরা আপেল জুস পান করবো [āmarā āpēla jusa pāna karabō]
they will drink tea তারা চা পান করবেন [tārā cā pāna karabēna]

Travel Phrases in Bengali

Imagine yourself in some Bengali speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Bengali - Pronunciation
Can you help me? আমাকে কি সাহায্য করতে পারেন? [āmākē ki sāhāyya karatē pārēna?]
Can I help you? আমি কি আপনাকে সাহায্য করতে পারি? [āmi ki āpanākē sāhāyya karatē pāri?]
Where is the airport? বিমানবন্দর কোথায়? [bimānabandara kōthāẏa?]
Go straight সোজা যান [sōjā yāna]
Then তারপর [tārapara]
Turn left বাঁ দিকে যান [bām̐ dikē yāna]
Turn right ডান দিকে যান [ḍāna dikē yāna]
