Bengali Adjectives

Welcome to the second Bengali lesson about adjectives. This time we will first learn about colors, followed by grammar rules, then weather expressions, finally a conversation in Bengali to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

black কালো [kālō]

grey ধূসর [dhūsara]

white সাদা [sādā]

blue নীল [nīla]

green সবুজ [sabuja]

yellow হলুদ [haluda]

red লাল [lāla]

brown বাদামি [bādāmi]

Adjectives Grammar Rules

In general adjectives are words which describe or modify another person or object in a given sentence. For example: a beautiful flower the adjective is [beautiful] because it describes the noun [flower]. The following examples use adjectives in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar Rules - Bengali + Pronunciation
my house is white [noun + adjective] আমার বাড়ি-র রঙ সাদা [āmāra bāṛi - ra raṅa sādā]
your country is big [noun + adjective] আপনার দেশ বড় [āpanāra dēśa baṛa]
new books are expensive [plural + adjective] নতুন বই দামী [natuna ba'i dāmī]
we are happy here [pronoun + verb + adjective] আমরা এখানে খুশি [āmarā ēkhānē khuśi]
she has three small dogs [adjective + plural] তার তিনটি ছোট কুকুর আছে [tāra tinaṭi chōṭa kukura āchē]
this language is very easy [adverb + adjective] এই ভাষা খুব সহজ [ē'i bhāṣā khuba sahaja]
I have a small green house [adjective + adjective] আমার একটা ছোট সবুজঘর আছে [āmāra ēkaṭā chōṭa sabujaghara āchē]

We're not done yet! The following is a list of more adjectives for you, often used when referring to weather conditions. I think it would be wise to memorize them.

cold ঠাণ্ডা [ṭhāṇḍā]

hot গরম [garama]

cloudy মেঘলা [mēghalā]

rainy বাদলা [bādalā]

snowy তুষারাবৃত [tuṣārābr̥ta]

sunny রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল [raudrōjjbala]

windy ঝোড়ো [jhōṛō]

warm উষ্ণ [uṣṇa]

Conversation in Bengali

Now we finally reach the most exciting part, the practice of the daily expressions used in almost every conversation. I recommend memorizing these phrases, because you will need them for sure.

English - Bengali - Pronunciation
hi কী খবর! [kī khabara!]
how are you? (আপনি) কেমন আছেন? [(āpani) kēmana āchēna?]
I'm good, thank you (আমি) ভালো আছি, ধন্যবাদ [(āmi) bhālō āchi, dhan'yabāda]
and you? আর, আপনি? [āra, āpani?]
what is your name? আপনার নাম কী? [āpanāra nāma kī?]
my name is Maya আমার নাম মায়া [āmāra nāma māẏā]
nice to meet you দেখা হয়ে ভালো লাগলো! [dēkhā haẏē bhālō lāgalō!]
