Belarusian Nouns

Welcome to the third Belarusian lesson about nouns. This time we will first learn about fruits and vegetables, followed by grammar rules, then food items, finally a conversation in Belarusian to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

Nouns Grammar Rules

In general nouns refer to a person, an object, or abstract ideas. For example: a fast runner the noun is [runner] because it refers to a person. The examples below use nouns in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

do you have milk? [verb + noun] ці ў вас (цябе) ёсць малако? [tzі w vas (tzyabye) yostzʲ malako?]
I have milk and coffee [preposition + noun] у мяне ёсць малако і кава [oo myanye yostzʲ malako і kava]
he has three apples [number + plural noun] у яго ёсць тры яблыкі [oo yaguo yostzʲ tri yablikі]
she only has one apple [number + singular noun] у яе ёсць толькі адзін яблык [oo yaye yostzʲ tolʲkі adzіn yablik]
we live in a small house [adjective + noun] мы жывем у маленькім доме [mi ʐivyem oo malyenʲkіm domye]
I like our breakfast [pronoun + noun] мне падабаецца наш сняданак [mnye padabayetztza nash snyadanak]

The following are nouns of food items that you might be interested in learning and memorizing.

bread хлеб [khlyeb]

milk малако [malako]

butter (сметанковае) масла [(smyetankovaye) masla]

cheese сыр [sir]

coffee кава [kava]

sandwich бутэрброд/сандвіч [booterbrod/sandvіch]

meat мяса [myasa]

chicken курыца/кураціна [kooritza/kooratzіna]

fish рыба [riba]

breakfast снеданне/сняданне/сняданак [snyedannye/snyadannye/snyadanak]

lunch ленч/полудзень/абед [lyench/poloodzyenʲ/abyed]

dinner абед [abyed]

Conversation in Belarusian

Now we finally reach the fun part, the practice of the daily conversations. These phrases are used to get to know new people, and break the ice.
