Urdu Gender

Welcome to the fifth Urdu lesson about gender. This time we will view a list of people, feminine and masculine, followed by grammar rules, finally a list of expressions in Urdu to help you practice your daily phrases.

man آدمی

woman عورت

husband شوہر

wife بیوی

boy لڑکا

girl لڑکی

father والد

mother ماں

Gender Grammar Rules

In general, gender is used to distinguish between male and female, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine. For example: my son and daughter are students the noun [son] is masculine, while [daughter] is feminine. The following examples use gender in different ways and places to demonstrate their behavior.

Grammar + Rules - Urdu
my son is a student [masculine + noun] میرا بیٹا ایک طالب علم ہے
her daughter is a student [feminine + noun] اس کی بیٹی ایک طالبہ ہے
he has a tall brother [adjective + masculine] اس کا ایک دراز قد بھائی ہے
she has a tall sister [adjective + feminine] اس کی ایک دراز قد بہن ہے
his brothers are young [plural masculine + adjective] اس کے بھائی چھوٹے ہیں
his sisters are young [plural feminine + adjective] اس کی بہنیں چھوٹی ہیں

The list below will probably provide more clarification. These are family members (males and females). I think it would be wise to memorize them as part of your important vocabulary list.

Expressions in Urdu

Now it's time to practice expressions used in daily conversations. If you're a beginner in learning Urdu, then the phrases below are something you would want to know.

English - Urdu
What do you mean? تمہارا مطلب کیا ہے؟
I don't understand میں سمجھا نہیں
I don't know مجھے نہیں معلوم.
What is that called in Urdu? اردو میں اسے کیا کہتے ہیں
What is this? یہ کیا ہے؟
What does that word mean in English? اس لفظ کا انگریزی میں کیا مطلب ہے؟
