Polish Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Polish. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Polish.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Polish conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Polish
I speak English mówię po angielsku
you speak French mówisz po francusku
he speaks German mówi po niemiecku
she speaks Italian ona mówi po włosku
we speak Arabic mówimy po arabsku
they speak Chinese oni mówią po chińsku

The past tense in Polish conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Polish
I visited France odwiedziłem francję
you visited Italy odwiedziłeś włochy
he visited Morocco odwiedził maroko
she visited China odwiedziła chiny
we visited Mexico odwiedziliśmy meksyk
they visited Kenya zwiedzili kenię

The future tense in Polish conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Polish
I will drink milk będę pić mleko
you will drink coffee bedziesz pił kawę
he will drink tea bedzie pił herbatę
she will drink water bedzie piła wodę
we will drink apple juice będziemy pić sok jabłkowy
they will drink tea bedą pili herbatę

Travel Phrases in Polish

Imagine yourself in some Polish speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - Polish
Can you help me? czy może pan [pani] mi pomóc?
Can I help you? czy mogę panu [pani] pomóc?
Where is the airport? gdzie jest lotnisko?
Go straight proszę iść prosto
Then następnie
Turn left skreęcić w lewo
Turn right skręcić w prawo
