Gujarati Gender

Welcome to the fifth Gujarati lesson about gender. This time we will view a list of people, feminine and masculine, followed by grammar rules, finally a list of expressions in Gujarati to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

Gender Grammar Rules

In general, gender is used to distinguish between male and female, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine. For example: my son and daughter are students the noun [son] is masculine, while [daughter] is feminine. The following examples use gender in different ways and places to demonstrate their behavior.

my son is a student
[masculine + noun] મારો પુત્ર એક વિદ્યાર્થી છે Audio [meāreo peute'r ek veide'yeāre'theī chhe]
her daughter is a student
[feminine + noun] તેણીની પુત્રી એક વિદ્યાર્થી છે Audio [teeṇeīneī peute'reī ek veide'yeāre'theī chhe]
he has a tall brother
[adjective + masculine] તેમના એક ભાઈ ઊંચા છે Audio [teemeneā ek bheāī ūmecheā chhe]
she has a tall sister
[adjective + feminine] તેમના એક બહેન ઉંચા છે Audio [teemeneā ek beheen umecheā chhe]
his brothers are young
[plural masculine + adjective] તેમના ભાઇઓ યુવાન છે Audio [teemeneā bheāio yeuveān chhe]
his sisters are young
[plural feminine + adjective] તેમની બહેનો યુવાન છે Audio [teemeneī beheeneo yeuveān chhe]

The list below will probably provide more clarification. These are family members (males and females). I think it would be wise to memorize them as part of your important vocabulary list.
