Gujarati Gender

Welcome to the fifth Gujarati lesson about gender. This time we will view a list of people, feminine and masculine, followed by grammar rules, finally a list of expressions in Gujarati to help you practice your daily phrases. To hear the pronunciation, just click on the sound icon.

man પુરુષ [peureuṣ]

woman સ્ત્રી [se'te'reī]

husband પતિ [petei]

wife પત્ની [pete'neī]

boy છોકરો [chheokereo]

girl છોકરી [chheokereī]

father પિતા [peiteā]

mother માતા [meāteā]

Gender Grammar Rules

In general, gender is used to distinguish between male and female, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine. For example: my son and daughter are students the noun [son] is masculine, while [daughter] is feminine. The following examples use gender in different ways and places to demonstrate their behavior.

my son is a student [masculine + noun] મારો પુત્ર એક વિદ્યાર્થી છે [meāreo peute'r ek veide'yeāre'theī chhe]
her daughter is a student [feminine + noun] તેણીની પુત્રી એક વિદ્યાર્થી છે [teeṇeīneī peute'reī ek veide'yeāre'theī chhe]
he has a tall brother [adjective + masculine] તેમના એક ભાઈ ઊંચા છે [teemeneā ek bheāī ūmecheā chhe]
she has a tall sister [adjective + feminine] તેમના એક બહેન ઉંચા છે [teemeneā ek beheen umecheā chhe]
his brothers are young [plural masculine + adjective] તેમના ભાઇઓ યુવાન છે [teemeneā bheāio yeuveān chhe]
his sisters are young [plural feminine + adjective] તેમની બહેનો યુવાન છે [teemeneī beheeneo yeuveān chhe]

The list below will probably provide more clarification. These are family members (males and females). I think it would be wise to memorize them as part of your important vocabulary list.

son પુત્ર [peute'r]

sister બહેન [beheen]

grandfather દાદા અથવા નાના [deādeā atheveā neāneā]

grandmother દાદી અથવા નાની [deādeī atheveā neāneī]
