Thai Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Thai. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Thai.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Thai conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Thai - Pronunciation
I speak English ฉันพูดภาษาอังกฤษ [chanphutphasaangkrit]
you speak French คุณพูดภาษาฝรั่งเศส [khunphutphasafarangset]
he speaks German เขาพูดภาษาเยอรมัน [khaophutphasayoenman]
she speaks Italian เธอพูดภาษาอิตาเลียน [thoephutphasaitalian]
we speak Arabic เราพูดภาษาอาหรับ [raophutphasaarap]
they speak Chinese พวกเขาพูดภาษาจีน [phuakkhaophutphasachin]

The past tense in Thai conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

I visited France ผมเยือนฝรั่งเศส [phomyueanfarangset]
you visited Italy คุณเข้าเยี่ยมชมอิตาลี [khunkhaoyiamchomitali]
he visited Morocco เขาเยือนโมร็อกโก [khaoyueanmorokko]
she visited China เธอไปเยี่ยมประเทศจีน [thoepaiyiamprathetchin]
we visited Mexico เราเข้าเยี่ยมชมเม็กซิโก [raokhaoyiamchommeksiko]
they visited Kenya พวกเขาเข้าชมเคนยา [phuakkhaokhaochomkhenya]

The future tense in Thai conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Thai - Pronunciation
I will drink milk ฉันจะดื่มนม [chanchaduemnom]
you will drink coffee คุณจะดื่มกาแฟ [khunchaduemkafae]
he will drink tea เขาจะดื่มชา [khaochaduemcha]
she will drink water เธอจะดื่มน้ำ [thoechaduemnam]
we will drink apple juice เราจะดื่มน้ำแอปเปิ้ล [raochaduemnamaeppoen]
they will drink tea พวกเขาจะดื่มชา [phuakkhaochaduemcha]

Travel Phrases in Thai

Imagine yourself in some Thai speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

Can you help me? คุณสามารถช่วยฉัน? [khunsamarotchuaichan]
Can I help you? ฉันสามารถช่วยคุณได้อย่างไร [chansamanthachuaikhundaiayangrai]
Where is the airport? สนามบินอยู่ที่ไหน? [sanambinayuthinai]
Go straight ตรงไป [trong pai]
Then จากนั้น [chak nan]
Turn left เลี้ยวซ้าย [liao sai]
Turn right เลี้ยวขวา [liao khwa]
