Portuguese Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Portuguese. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Portuguese.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Portuguese conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Portuguese
I speak English eu falo inglês
you speak French fala francês/falas francês
he speaks German ele fala alemão
she speaks Italian ela fala italiano
we speak Arabic nós falamos árabe
they speak Chinese eles falam chinês

The past tense in Portuguese conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Portuguese
I visited France eu visitei a frança
you visited Italy visitou itália/visitas-te italia
he visited Morocco ele visitou marrocos
she visited China ela visitou a china
we visited Mexico nós visitamos o méxico
they visited Kenya eles visitaram o quênia

The future tense in Portuguese conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Portuguese
I will drink milk eu vou beber leite
you will drink coffee vai beber café/vais beber café
he will drink tea ele vai beber chá
she will drink water ela vai beber água
we will drink apple juice nós vamos beber sumo de maçã
they will drink tea eles vão beber chá

Go straight em frente
