Latvian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Latvian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Latvian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Latvian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Latvian
I speak English es runāju angliski Audio
you speak French tu runā franču valodā Audio
he speaks German viņš runā vāciski Audio
she speaks Italian viņa runā itāliski Audio
we speak Arabic mēs runājam arābu valodā Audio
they speak Chinese viņi runā ķīniešu valodā Audio

The past tense in Latvian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Latvian
I visited France es esmu bijis (bijusi) francijā Audio
you visited Italy jūs esat bijis (bijusi) itālijā Audio
he visited Morocco viņš ir bijis marokā Audio
she visited China viņa ir bijusi ķīnā Audio
we visited Mexico mēs esam bijuši meksikā Audio
they visited Kenya viņi ir bijuši kenijā Audio

The future tense in Latvian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Latvian
I will drink milk es dzeršu pienu Audio
you will drink coffee jūs dzersit kafiju Audio
he will drink tea viņš dzers tēju Audio
she will drink water viņa dzers ūdeni Audio
we will drink apple juice mēs dzersim ābolu sulu Audio
