Indonesian Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Indonesian. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Indonesian.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Indonesian conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Indonesian
I speak English saya berbicara bahasa inggris Audio
you speak French anda berbicara bahasa perancis Audio
he speaks German ia berbicara bahasa jerman Audio
she speaks Italian ia berbicara bahasa italia Audio
we speak Arabic kami berbicara dalam bahasa arab Audio
they speak Chinese mereka berbicara bahasa cina Audio

The past tense in Indonesian conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Indonesian
I visited France saya mengunjungi prancis Audio
you visited Italy anda mengunjungi italia Audio
he visited Morocco ia mengunjungi maroko Audio
she visited China ia mengunjungi cina Audio
we visited Mexico kami mengunjungi meksiko Audio
they visited Kenya mereka berkunjung ke kenya Audio

The future tense in Indonesian conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Indonesian
I will drink milk saya akan minum susu Audio
you will drink coffee anda akan minum kopi Audio
he will drink tea dia akan minum tehh Audio
she will drink water dia akan minum air putih Audio
we will drink apple juice kami akan minum jus apel Audio
