Hebrew Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Hebrew. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Hebrew.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Hebrew conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Hebrew
I speak English אני מדבר אנגלית
you speak French אתה מדבר צרפתית
he speaks German הוא מדבר גרמנית
she speaks Italian היא מדברת איטלקית
we speak Arabic אנחנו מדברים ערבית
they speak Chinese הם מדברים סינית

The past tense in Hebrew conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Hebrew
I visited France ביקרתי בצרפת
you visited Italy ביקרת באיטליה
he visited Morocco הוא ביקר במרוקו
she visited China היא ביקרה בסין
we visited Mexico ביקרנו במקסיקו
they visited Kenya הם ביקרו בקניה

The future tense in Hebrew conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Hebrew
I will drink milk אשתה חלב
you will drink coffee אתה תשתה קפה
he will drink tea הוא ישתה תה
she will drink water היא תשתה מים
we will drink apple juice אנחנו נשתה מיץ תפוחים
they will drink tea הם ישתו תה

Where is the airport? איפה נמל התעופה?
Go straight סע ישר
Then אז
Turn left פנה שמאלה
Turn right פנה ימינה
