Hausa Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in Hausa. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in Hausa.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in Hausa conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - Hausa
I speak English ina jin turanci
you speak French ka iya faransanci
he speaks German yana jin jamusanci
she speaks Italian tana jin italiyanci
we speak Arabic muna jin larabci
they speak Chinese suna jin harshen china

The past tense in Hausa conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - Hausa
I visited France na baƙunci faransa
you visited Italy ka zayarci italiya
he visited Morocco ya ziyarci ƙasar maroko
she visited China ta ziyarci china
we visited Mexico mun zayarci mexico
they visited Kenya sun ziyarci kasar kenya

The future tense in Hausa conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - Hausa
I will drink milk zan sha madara
you will drink coffee za ka/ki/ku sha kofii
he will drink tea zai sha ti
she will drink water za ta sha ruwa
we will drink apple juice za mu sha lemu
they will drink tea za su sha ti
