French Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in French. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in French.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in French conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - French
I speak English je parle anglais Audio
you speak French vous parlez français Audio
he speaks German il parle allemand Audio
she speaks Italian elle parle italien Audio
we speak Arabic nous parlons l'arabe Audio
they speak Chinese ils parlent le chinois Audio

The past tense in French conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - French
I visited France j'ai visité la france Audio
you visited Italy vous avez visité l'italie Audio
he visited Morocco il a visité le maroc Audio
she visited China elle a visité la chine Audio
we visited Mexico nous avons visité le mexique Audio
they visited Kenya ils ont visité le kenya Audio

The future tense in French conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - French
I will drink milk je boirai du lait Audio
you will drink coffee vous boirez du café Audio
he will drink tea il boira du thé Audio
she will drink water elle boira de l'eau Audio
we will drink apple juice nous boirons du jus de pomme Audio
they will drink tea ils boiront du thé Audio
