French Verbs

Welcome to the 10th lesson about verbs in French. We will first learn about the present tense, followed by the past tense, and future tense. We will also analyze some grammar rules, and finally practice how to ask for direction in French.

Verbs are used to express an action (I swim) or a state of being (I am). The present tense in French conveys a situation or event in the present time. Here are some examples:

Present Tense - French
I speak English je parle anglais
you speak French vous parlez français
he speaks German il parle allemand
she speaks Italian elle parle italien
we speak Arabic nous parlons l'arabe
they speak Chinese ils parlent le chinois

The past tense in French conveys a situation or event in the past time. Here are some examples:

Past Tense - French
I visited France j'ai visité la france
you visited Italy vous avez visité l'italie
he visited Morocco il a visité le maroc
she visited China elle a visité la chine
we visited Mexico nous avons visité le mexique
they visited Kenya ils ont visité le kenya

The future tense in French conveys a situation or event which is anticipated to happen in the future. Here are some examples:

Future Tense - French
I will drink milk je boirai du lait
you will drink coffee vous boirez du café
he will drink tea il boira du thé
she will drink water elle boira de l'eau
we will drink apple juice nous boirons du jus de pomme
they will drink tea ils boiront du thé

Travel Phrases in French

Imagine yourself in some French speaking country. The following travel phrases are highly important and can help you avoid misunderstanding. Try to memorize them and practice!

English - French
Can you help me? pouvez-vous m'aider ?
Can I help you? puis-je vous aider ?
Where is the airport? où est l'aéroport ?
Go straight continuez tout droit
Then puis
Turn left tournez à gauche
Turn right tournez à droite
