Adjectives Grammar Rules

In general adjectives are words which describe or modify another person or object in a given sentence. For example: a beautiful flower the adjective is [beautiful] because it describes the noun [flower]. The following examples use adjectives in different ways and places to demonstrate how they behave in a sentence.

Grammar Rules - Oriya + Pronunciation
my house is white
[noun + adjective] ମୋ ଘର ଧଳା ଅଟେ
[mō ghara dhaḷā aṭē]
your country is big
[noun + adjective] ଆପଣଙ୍କର ଦେଶ ବଡ଼ ଅଟେ
[āpaṇaṅkara dēśa baṛa aṭē]
new books are expensive
[plural + adjective] ନୂଆ ବହିଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଦାମିକିଆ
[nū'ā bahiguṛika dāmiki'ā]
we are happy here
[pronoun + verb + adjective] ଆମେ ଏଠାରେ ଖୁସିରେ ଅଛୁ
[āmē ēṭhārē khusirē achu]
she has three small dogs
[adjective + plural] ତାଙ୍କର ତିନୋଟି ଛୋଟ କୁକୁର ଅଛନ୍ତି
[tāṅkara tinōṭi chōṭa kukura achanti]
this language is very easy
[adverb + adjective] ଏହି ଭାଷାଟି ବହୁତ ସହଜିଆ ଅଟେ
[ēhi bhāṣāṭi bahuta sahaji'ā aṭē]
I have a small green house
[adjective + adjective] ମୋର ଗୋଟିଏ ଛୋଟ ସବୁଜ ଘର ଅଛି
[mōra gōṭi'ē chōṭa sabuja ghara achi]

Now we finally reach the most exciting part, the practice of the daily expressions used in almost every conversation. I recommend memorizing these phrases, because you will need them for sure.

how are you? ଆପଣ କିପରି ଅଛନ୍ତି? [āpaṇa kipari achanti.]
I'm good, thank you ମୁଁ ଭଲ ଅଛି, ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ [mum̐ bhala achi, dhanẏabāda]
and you? ଆଉ ଆପଣ? [ā'u āpaṇa.]
what is your name? ଆପଣଙ୍କର ନାମ କ’ଣ ? [āpaṇaṅkara nāma ka 'ṇa.]
my name is Maya ମୋ ନାଁ ହେଉଛି ମାୟା [mō nām̐ hē'uchi māẏā]
nice to meet you ଆପଣଙ୍କୁ ଭେଟି ଭଲ ଲାଗିଲା [āpaṇaṅku bhēṭi bhala lāgilā]
